Pipes break. Sometimes you cannot immediately repair or replace a pipe, and other times, it might take a plumber some time to come and look at the pipe. What do you do until then? You can’t let the pipe continue as is because it might cause further damage. Here is an inexpensive and easy method to create a temporary patch until a more permanent solution is produced..
First you have to find the right type of patch for your pipe. Figure out if it the pipe or the fitting that needs to be patched. Any home improvement store will have what you need once you figure out where the problem lays. Ask an employee what type of patch is right for the job if you are unsure. They might ask what type of pipe it is, so be armed with that information.
Make sure the water is shut off before patching the pipe. Measure the size of the patch needed and the pipe’s circumference to produce the right fit until the pipe is repaired. Take some pipe tape and put it around the pipe’s circumference, making sure it’s tight. Let the tape sit in place for a few minutes before turning the water back on.

Compression fittings are essential for your plumbing as without them, your plumbing might not run at full efficiency. Compressions fittings connect two wall joints in a plumbing system. They are made of brass and are found in any home improvement store as a two-sided or three-sided fit, based on your plumbing system. Compression fittings forms tight seals over pipes and prevents water from leaking.
Compression fittings allow for fewer leaks to occur. If compression fittings are installed properly, the amount of wear should be minimal. This makes compression fittings the longest lasting of all fittings associated with plumbing. Compression fitting don’t wear down due to sweating. These fittings can be sweated with no trouble, and you don’t need assistance from a plumber. They are easy and quick to use and there is no need for soldering, special skills or tools. They are also good for installations that might necessitate occasional disassembly or maintenance.
However, before buying compression fittings first check the type of plumbing that runs throughout your home as some pipes don’t work well with these fittings. Take an inventory of the types of plumbing fixtures you have around your home and inquire if compression fittings would be the optimal choice. They also don’t look as nice as soldered joints which are neater.

Clogged drains are often at the top of the list of home repairs and require that you know a little something about the proper procedure involved in removing the clog.
The first step to any drain repair is to remove any standing water still remaining in the basin. You can use either a siphon or a hose to remove standing water. Leave a minimal amount of water in the basin so you can test to see if the drain is repaired when you are done.
Then, remove the drain cover with a screwdriver. If your drain cover is not removable, don’t worry about it. Don’t try to remove something that is not removable – you might cause more damage.
Always start with some plunger action. A mainstay of any home, most often a plunger can remove what is causing the drain clog. Put the plunger over the drain opening, sealing off all air. Take the plunger and move it up and down a few times and then take it off the drain. If the water starts draining, then the clog is repaired, if not, read further.
Other options when it comes to removing a clog include manual removal (if you can take off the drain cover) with tweezers, a chemical de-clogger (or vinegar with baking soda if you don’t want to use chemicals), and lastly a plumbers snake.
If none of these work, call a plumber in because the problem might be more complex and will need professional eyes.

Most plumbers recommend PVC pipes under their sinks.

Leaking water heaters can lead to larger problems that will cost more to repair. Here is a guide of what to look for with a leaking water heater.
Your temperature pressure relief valve might be faulty, which can cause leaking. Leaks also occur if the valve senses additional pressure in the water heater. If there is a large increase in pressure, a water heater is likely to explode, so make this your first checkpoint when searching for a leak.
Loose drain valves also causes leaks and will need to be replaced. Obstructions in the gas water heater vent system can cause leakages as well. Look at the water pipes that run from your water heater. If the leak originates from the pipes, make sure the fitting at the located of the leak is tight.
If you are having a difficult time locating the source of the leak, do not be hesitant and call up your local plumber. Water heaters are expensive and a bad fix can do permanent damage, and your water heater will need replacement. If you test the leak repairs and the leak persists, call a plumber because it might be more than just a loose pipe.

Water softeners are used to breakdown two minerals that build up in pipes – calcium and magnesium, Hard water is safe to consumer, however, it can decrease water flow and damage pipes to the point where you would need to call in a plumber to have them replaced. Water softeners prevent such hazards from forming.
Water softeners replace calcium and magnesium with minerals and chemicals that mix well with soap and decreases the likelihood of a buildup in your pipes. Water from the pipes travel through the water softener, filled with plastic beads, known as zeolite, and are covered in potassium or sodium. As water goes through the beads, an ion exchange occurs, and the magnesium and calcium remain attached to the beads, while the sodium or potassium run through the water. After awhile, the beads become coated with the discarded minerals and need to be flushed with a high-content sodium solution, like brine.
Water softeners shouldn’t be used in pipes that bring water to gardens and lawns as the sodium can prevent proper growth. As well, water softeners hold a potential health risk for individuals with hypertension and kidney disease due to the high level of sodium produced in the water, so caution needs to be taken.

Plumbing codes are building codes that affect safety. Often overlooked, plumbing doesn’t just cover pipes but many aspects of home maintenance. Plumbing codes don’t get the same attention as electrical or building codes, but the truth is poor plumbing can be harmful to your property, not to mention your health. Prior to do any plumbing work in your home, research plumbing codes as they will list what you are able to do, as well as what you are not able to do when it comes to home plumbing projects.
Plumbing codes are easy to understand and can vary depending on where you live. Plumbing codes dictate that with small home repairs, such as fixing a leaking sink, there is no need for a professional plumber to inspect the finished work. However, if your project is more complex, such as relocating a sink, you will have to hire a professional plumber or have a plumber sign off that the work was completed satisfactorily.
To find your local plumbing codes, take a visit to city hall where you can read up on codes and obtain a building permit. Alternatively, you can also look online and in the library for local plumbing codes.
Plumbing codes were developed to protect your health and those around you from the hazards of poor plumbing.

Copper pipes are usually the number one recommended pipes by plumbers due to its versatility and availability. One of the earliest noted dates where copper pipes were used was in 2500 BC. Copper pipes can be used for water supplies and gas lines throughout your home. It is ideal for the hard-to-reach spaces due to its flexibility and the ease of which it is installed.
There are two available forms of copper piping for homes – rigid copper pipes and flexible copper pipes. Rigid copper pipes are not able to bend around corners and must be connected with the right fitting. Flexible copper pipes can bend and are recommended for water supply installation to a bathroom or kitchen faucet.
Copper pipes are suggested over PVC piping when it comes to potable water, because PVC pipes can build up with bacteria and contamination. Copper pipes have a much longer life-span than PVC pipes.
Use copper pipes at your next DIY plumbing project – it is easy to put in and it can increase the resale value of your home. Though not corrosion proof, as alkaline or acid water can cause corrosion, if properly maintained and checked, the presence of corrosion will be minimal.
Why skip out on the most excellent plumbing solution?
